our year long volunteer
(YLV) program
an intentional community with and for others.
-
Since its foundation in 1964, the Center has had the help of volunteers in all aspects of the mission’s service of the most vulnerable. From Peace Core volunteers to many a BVM sister, the Center’s work has flourished because of our volunteers’ passion to serve and accompany our “Family of Families!”
The Center’s own Year Long Volunteer (YLV) Program began in 1985, and we have more than 600 people who make up our volunteer family! The Center’s YLVs are involved in all aspects of the mission’s services and play a key role in assisting the Ecuadorian staff with our integral family programming.

To apply to the Center’s Year Long Volunteer (YLV) Program, please follow the steps below:
Contact our Community Director, Olivia Young, to discuss your reasoning for wanting to serve, to review the YLV requirements and what the next steps are for your application process.
After your conversation with Olivia, if you remain interested in the opportunity, you will receive an e-mailed application. Please return your filled out application along with your resume and cover letter to give us greater insight into your qualifications, passions, and life experiences.
Upon reviewing your submission to verify that you are a qualified candidate, Olivia will reach out to schedule two phone conversations: 1) in English and 2) a shorter call to gauge your Spanish speaking abilities.
After conferring with the Center’s Executive Team and ensuring that you will be a positive addition to the Center team, Olivia will send you a “Volunteer Agreement” & “COVID-19 Waiver” to be signed should you commit to being a Center Year Long Volunteer. All potential volunteers should read this document carefully and thoroughly. If you understand & assume the responsibilities and commit to abiding by all terms in the agreement and believe the Center is the right volunteer experience for you, please sign and return the documents to Olivia.
Upon receipt of your signed agreement and waiver, Olivia will send you more volunteer information and the instructions needed to begin your visa process. At this point, you are considered a confirmed Center volunteer.
Please note: the application process is not officially finished until all four steps have been completed.

I visited the Center - A Family of Families in January 2025 with a service-immersion program through my university. While in Quito for those short 10 days, I fell in love with the culture of compassion and accompaniment that the Center ingrains into every part of their organization. The staff, children, and families were so eager to invite us into their world, welcoming us into their great big Family of Families. I was also attracted to the community living aspect of the program to be able to connect and bond with other young adults through this unique experience. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to continue learning and growing as a greater part of the Family of Families!

When I went on an immersion and service trip to the Center with my college in 2023, it really changed me. It was my first time doing something like that on such a big scale, and seeing how our group’s efforts made a difference in the community was so heartwarming. What touched me the most was seeing how impactful the Center’s work is for the families. I grew up in Honduras and was surrounded by marginalized communities, so I understand how much it means when families have a place of support and hope. Being there made me realize how connected I feel to this kind of work, and how important it is to keep walking with people who often feel unseen. It’s not just about helping, it’s about learning, growing, and being part of something bigger than myself.

I’m still figuring out what I would like to study in university, but right now I’m leaning towards International Relations, since I’ve always been really curious about politics and global issues.
What excites me most is being part of a space where people come together to share ideas and experiences. I’m looking forward to building connections, learning new things, and hopefully making a positive impact with my work here and of course improve my Spanish

I'm excited to be a part of an intentional community and to learn and grow through service engagement with working people's lived experiences in Quito. I’ve gleaned a lot from the social work experience I have, and I’d like to continue in that field to inform a career in public policy. I hope my experience with the Center for Working Families will further prepare me with the professional fluency to pursue graduate school work at a Spanish speaking Latin American institution.

The Center’s work is a powerful reminder of the difference we can make when we come together with a shared purpose. I’m also inspired by the stories and resilience of the people we serve. Their strength and perseverance in the face of challenges are humbling and push me to give my best work every day. I came back because of the community at the center. At the beginning of my first year I did not speak any Spanish, and everyone greeted me with open arms. By the end of my first year, I was deeply attached to my work, my friends that I’ve made, and the people of the center. The evolution of my experience at the center has made me a better man for a better world and a better man for others. I am truly grateful for the love that was shown to me during my first year, and I am excited to reciprocate that love this year.

I am an aspiring Spanish teacher and want to take time to learn more about the culture that I am supposed to teach so I don’t misrepresent the culture or language to my future students. I also feel called to help people and empower them to succeed. I have always wanted to learn about the world I live in and the people that share this world with me. I also believe that you can learn about people and different cultures properly from a book, you need to experience it. I also want to do what I can to make the world a better and more fair place.

I am lucky that I got to live and work in Wenabozho Ominisan (the Apostle Islands) this past summer. My job was to be a camping and kayak guide. I loved living in this beautiful and special place. I’m looking forward to listening, learning, and getting to know incredible people, the rich culture of Ecuador, and the beautiful land. I’m very excited to learn Spanish and about urban agriculture. Food is fundamental to liberation work and connecting people and the land. I am ready to be a student and member of the Center’s family. Blessings to you! ¡Añay!

I knew that after graduating from college I wanted to pursue a year of service internationally as a way to expand my cultural understanding while simultaneously increasing my Spanish language proficiency. As soon as I came across the YLV program, I fell in love with the mission of the Center. After learning more, I felt the strong sense of community and am looking forward to connecting with local families. I am excited to get to know Ecuador, grow, and apply the Center’s mission this year along with my fellow YLVs!
